Hobsonville Point Development - Catalina Barracks
Hobsonville Point is a long-term development of the Hobsonville Peninsula, situated in the upper reaches of Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour. Encompassing 167 hectares of land and 4kms of pristine coastline, the site will soon accommodate a whole new community within the Auckland Region.
Used by the New Zealand Defence Force for a large part of the twentieth century the area has a rich history and many interesting structures including the Catalina Barracks. As the redevelopment progresses, one of the aims is to preserve high quality heritage buildings to maintain the current character whilst actively utilising them in the redevelopment.
The Catalina Barracks was built for the Royal New Zealand Air Force in the 1930s for use as a Single Mans Quarters and Mess. Being one of the largest timber buildings ever built in New Zealand it has great historic value. It is made up of five separate wings with interconnecting corridors and the Marseille pattern clay roofing tiles, timber joinery and weatherboard cladding give the building a significant architectural status.
ACH Consulting Engineers was engaged to provide a structural condition report which included recommendations for floor loading capacity, earthquake resistance and a detailed risk matrix for maintenance and repair work required to preserve the exterior cladding envelope.
The report will be used by the HLC to decide how best to integrate the ‘Catalina’ into the developed Hobsonville Point community. Some options under consideration are residential apartments, commercial or retail space, restaurant or bar facilities and public galleries.
